Wheelchairs have strong differences in how they feel, how they fit, how they respond and what they enable the wheelchair user to do.

It is therefore very important that you choose the correct wheelchair for you and your needs.

How To Choose A New Wheelchair?

There are 3 Basic Steps is choosing the correct wheelchair yourself or someone you know:


  1. The first step is to determine what your or the user’s needs are? The “Questions to ask when choosing a wheelchair” section below will assist you to ask questions that will determine what you need your wheelchair to be able to do.
  2. Pairing what you need from a wheelchair with wheelchairs that are available.
  3. Ensuring that the wheelchair is the correct size for you – the user.
  1. What are your needs?
    1. What will you be using the wheelchair for:
      1. Do you have a specific medical condition?
      2. Will it be for short periods of time when you need to walk longer distances?
      3. Will it be using it daily for longer than two hours?
      4. Will you be using permanently?
  2. Sizing of the wheelchair user:
    1. What is the weight of the wheelchair user?
    2. What is the hip width of the wheelchair user? (Please see Sizing your wheelchair section: measurements 1 & 2 apply)
  3. How do you plan to use the wheelchair?
    1. Will someone push you?
    2. Will you be “pushing” yourself?
  4. What is your living environment like?
    1. Where will I use my wheelchair most?
    2. Will you be using it in urban area’s that are concrete, tiled or smooth surfaces?
    3. Will you be using it outside over rough terrain?
  5. How do you plan to travel as a driver or a passenger in motor vehicles?
  6. How will I transfer from the wheelchair to other surfaces?
